The South American alpaca, with its exotic look, shy curiosity and humming communication, is utterly charming. Alpacas are gentle, quiet and neat. They are creatures of routine with strong herd instincts, making them easy to locate together in the pastures by day or hanging out in the barn at night. They grow a renewable product—their exquisitely soft, lanolin-free fleece—with a high-end market where demand far exceeds supply. They’re nibblers in the pasture with soft padded feet that are easy on the grass. The novelty of the animals and the industry tends to encourage cooperation along with friendly competition among breeders and, best of all, there is absolutely no slaughter involved.
All this and fresh air, open space, no commute, and so much more time for family. What’s not to love?
